  • Font style - no more than 3 fonts are used in a design piece
  • Serif - title heading and body of the message (times new roman, georgia, garamond)
  • Sans serif - clear and direct meaning of text (calibri, arial, impact)
  • Slab - large advertising design (rockwell, playbill)
  • Decorative - cater to a wide variety of emotions (jokerman, chiller)
  • Proximity - how items and information are grouped
  • Contrast - to make layouts graphically appealing
  • Alignment - it creates order or organization in design. Nothing should look as if it were placed there randomly
  • Balance - provides stability and structure to a design; adjusting visual weight
  • Symmetrical balance - identical weights are on equal side of a composition
  • Asymmetrical balance - design have unequal graphic weight on either side
  • Radial balance - design elements swirl out from a central axis
  • Repetition - repetition of elements; pleasing to the eyes and can communicate important content
  • Space - are that an object occupies
  • White space - gives design 'breathing room'
  • Positive space - subjects or area of interest
  • Negative space - area around the subjects
  • Line - points moving in space; can create a sense of movement or direction (smooth, rough, straight, curve, broken, thin, thick)
  • Texture - the surface appearance of an object given by the dimensions, form, thickness, arrangement, amount of its basic parts
  • Shape - used to create patterns and draw the viewers' attention
  • Size - "scale"; the relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another
  • Color - light redirected off objects used to create curiosity and emotions to the viewers
  • Infographic - information graphic
  • Infographic - a photographic presentations of data/info that use the different elements of design to make data easily understandable

  • Visual message design - can help with the effectiveness of delivery of a message as it leads assistance in presenting ideas clearly
