  • PHENOMENOLOGY
    • examines human experiences thru the descriptions provided by the people involved
    • GOAL: to describe the meaning that experiences hold for each subject (mas deep compare to narrative)
  • ETHNOGRAPHY
    • involve the collections and analysis of data about cultural groups
    • Agar(1986) - describe ethno. as "encountering alien worlds and making sense of them"
    • Cameron(1990) - wrote ethno. as "learning from people"
    • Leininger(1985) - ethno. can be defined as "systematic process of observing, detailing, describing, documenting, and analyzing the lifeways or particular patterns of a culture"
  • GROUNDED THEORY
    • developed by 2 sociologists, GLASER & STRAUSS(1985)
    • data are collected and analyzed and then a THEORY IS DEVELOPED
    • uses both an inductive and deductive approach
    • Field & Morse(1985) "constructs and concepts are grounded in the data and hypothesis are tested as they arise from the research"
  • NARRATIVE RESEARCH
    • to understand how research participants construct stories and narrative from their own personal experiences
    • dual layer
    • participants interpret their own lives
    • researcher interpret the CONSTRUCTION OF THAT NARRATIVE
  • CASE STUDY
    • in-depth examinations of people or groups of people
    • could also examine an institutions, such us hospice care for the dying
