  • In many ways, the political dominance of the Communist Party led to an increasingly conservative political system.
  • There was no place for new ideas or responding to grassroots opinion.
  • Loyalty to Stalin and the party was the only important characteristic needed for political advancement.
    • This made for a rather stagnant political system as people feared criticising the party line or being innovative.
