    "austere" - self imposed control, repressive nature of Victorian society.
    "gin" - restricting himself from indulging in wine, drank gin alone as representative of lower class so didn't want to tarnish is reputation
  • "he cherished Mr Utterson a sincere and warm affection"
    "warm affection"- quintessential Victorian gentlemen, trustworthy and moral nature
    "sincere" - reinforces his trust and honesty, however this trust becomes his fatal flaw as he's blind to the evil of Jekyll.
  • "if he be Mr Hyde I shall be Mr seek"
    "Hyde" and "seek - inherent duality of man, fascination and curiosity behind the façade of all Victorian gentlemen.
    "Hyde" - homophone introduce concealment and illusion, exposes limitations of Victorian physiognomy.
  • "one thing to mortify curiosity, another to conquer it"
    "conquer" - creates image of battle, Utterson presents the struggle like warfare to contain his dual nature.
    "Mortify" - juxtaposes "conquer", difference between subduing and eradicating the temptations.
  • "there was borne in upon his mind a crushing anticipation of calamity" 

    "Borne" - links to idea of creation associated with god, however in this context is used to present how religion is being usurped by science.
    "crushing" - impending doom as religion is being replaced by science which will bring chaos.
