  • Components of a DC motor?
Circuit, magnets, electromagnets, armature, commutator, permanent magnet, and source.
  • Circuit

Used to make the whole DC motor work.
  • Magnets
Has a north/south pole. Cant be turned on/off. Opposites attract and similar repels.
  • Electromagnets
Current of wires is used to make magnetic domains of the metal line up. Can be turned on/off and needs a battery.
  • Armature
Carries electrical current in the DC motor circuit. It is what spins. Permanent magnets pushes one side of it up and other side down for it to spin.
  • Brushes
Transfer power between rotating armature coils and stationary wires.
  • Commutator
Makes sure current flows in same direction. Cuts electrical connection to stop magnets from attracting/getting stuck.
  • Permanent Magnet
Used to attract armature for it to spin.
  • Source
Where electrical energy comes from to spin motor.
  • Flow of energy in a DC motor

Power source, wire, brushes, commutator, armature, and vice versa out.
  • How a DC motor works
First - Armature spins bc of permanent magnet

Second - When armature spins, brushes switch sides on commutator. Switches polarity of electromagnet.
  • Magnetic Induction
Movement of magnets around a coil of wire (or vice versa) to create an electrical current. Only one needs to move.
  • Energy conversion of a DC motor is:
    Electrical Energy to Kinetic Energy.
  • How a Generator works:
Works same as DC Motor but armature is moved/powered by turbine instead of battery.
  • Energy Conversion of Generator
    Kinetic Energy to Electrical Energy.
  • What is the thing labeled "1" called?
    Source
  • What is the thing labeled "2" called?
    Brushes
  • What is the thing labeled "3" called?
    Commutator
  • What is the thing labeled "4" called?
    Permanent Magnet
  • What is the thing labeled "5" called?
    Armature
  • Hydroelectric energy source

What is it - Uses energy of flowing water to generate electricity using turbines.
Pros - Renewable, can be stored, doesn't produce carbon.
Khans - High construction cost, large land amount used, habitat downstream destroyed
  • Wind
What is it - Wind passes through turbine which produces energy.
Pros - Renewable, efficient use of land, no carbon produced
Khans - Can't be stored, noise pollution, hurts birds :(
  • Fossil Fuels
What is it - Carbon based fuel sources. Used to combust water and the steam turns turbines.
Pros - High energy output, efficient use of land
Khans - Non-renewable, produces lots of carbon
  • Nuclear Energy
What is it - Fission reaction heats water to steam which powers turbines.
Pros - Good use of land, doesn't produce carbon.
Khans - Non-renewable, high cost, toxic long-term waste.
  • Solar
What is it - Semi conductor absorbs protons and converts energy to electricity.
Pros - Renewable, good use of land, no carbon produced.
Khans - High maintenance costs, intermitted, toxic if decomissioned.
