  • What cultural changes have happened around discrimination?
    Since 1960s -has been decline prejudice towards ethnic minorities
    1987 British attitudes survey found that 39% of people said they were racially prejudiced whereas by 2017 fallen to 26%
    2018 survey by Britain saw that 66% of the over 65s in ethnic minorities said level of racial prejudice today is lower than it was in 1968
    People are now more likely to see that discrimination is a criminal offence
  • What is a reason for culture change?

    Due to changes in law
    • psychologists think if we are made to change our behaviour we tend to change our attitudes to fit it
    • if the law is changed to forbid discrimination people may abandon their prejudiced attitudes to bring them in line with how they are now required to behave
  • How did people face discrimination during the 1950s - 1960s

    Housing, employment and services
    1965 a survey found that 1.5% of whites would be willing to let a room to a coloured tenant
    BBC documentary found churches turning away black families to avoid upsetting white worshippers
    At the time it was legal to discriminate
    • led to exploitation by landlords - letting slum houses to immigrants - who could only get a low paid job
  • What is direct and indirect discrimination?
    Direct - someone treats you less favourably
    Indirect - policy or law that applies to everyone but has a worse effect on some groups than others
  • What is the Race relations act?
    What was it finally replaced with?
    Passed in 1965 - banned racial discrimination in public places
    In 1968 added discrimination in key areas of employment - housing and public services
    Replaced by the 1976 Race Relations Act - extended law covering both direct and indirect discrimination
    2010 replaced by equality act
  • How have immigration levels and racism laws changed over the last 100yrs?

    1945 - fewer than 20,000 non-white immigrants in the UK
    1950s-1960s non white immigrants who came over from former British Colonies who came in search of economic opportunities, often filling jobs that Britain refused to take
    Uk’s demographic changed to a multi- ethnic one
