Broadband and Bandwidth

Cards (9)

  • Broadband: high-speed transmission of data, voice and video over long distances
Bandwidth: the maximum amount of data transmitted over an internet connection in a second
    old measurement: bps(bits per second)
    new measurement: Mbps(megabits "") and Gbps(gigabits "")
  • Router: a network device that directs data packets between different computer networks, determining the best path for data transmission. They also enable communication between the local network and the internet.
  • Bluetooth: a short-range wireless technology standard that is used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances and building personal area networks
    Range:
    class1: 100m
    class3: 10m
  • NFC: Near Field Communication, a wireless technology that allows devices to communicate with each other without wires
  • RFID: Radio Frequency Identification. A system that uses radio waves to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects.
  • Wi-Fi: a technology that enables wireless communication between devices within a local area network, allowing them to connect to the internet and share data without the need for physical cables.
  • Throttling: the intentional slowing down of internet speed or data transfer rate by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) after a certain usage limit has been reached, often to manage network congestion.
  • Piggybacking: occurs when unauthorized users gain access to a wireless network by connecting to it without the owner's knowledge or consent. It often involves exploiting unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
  • Shaping: when restrictions are applied to a certain type of data such as torrents and streaming
E.g. browsing wont be shaped but downloading a large file may be slowed
