    • the endocrine system controls vital functions in the body through hormones. It is slower than the nervous system but has more widespread and powerful effects
    • Glands are organs that produce hormones. The main gland is the pituitary gland and it is located in the Brian. It is referred to as the 'master gland' as it controls the release of hormones from all the other endocrine glands in the body.
    • Hormones are secrete in the bloodstream and affect any cell in the body that has a receptor for that particular hormone
    • endocrine system and autonomous nervous system often work together such as in flight or fight response. This is done by, stressor perceived by the hypothalamus which activates the pituitary gland. The sympathetic nervous system is now aroused. Adrenaline is released from the adrenal medulla into the bloodstream. This delivers around the body causing changes in target organs like increased heart and breathing rate. This is called fight or flights and is immediate and automatic when a threat is perceived. Parasympathetic nervous system takes over after threat
