making soluble salts

Cards (5)

    1. start with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid - our limiting reactant.
    2. gently heat the acid until almost boiling
  • 3) use spatula to add small amounts of copper oxide to the acid and stir with a glass rod - copper oxide will react and seem to disappear.
    4) add more copper oxide until some powder remains after stirring - reaction has stopped and acid has reacted.
  • 5) pour mixture into a funnel lined with filter paper to remove the unreacted copper oxide and allow the filtrate to drip to the copper sulphate.
  • 6) add filtrate into evaporating dish and heat gently using bunsen burner until half the solution remains
  • 7) leave solution for 24 hours to allow crystals to form, then scrape crystals onto paper towel and gently pat them dry.
