It was a change from farming to factories and turned London into a rural city and the poor were subject to work in horrible conditions and children aged 4-5 were forced to work
Dickens and the poor:
Dickens grew up poor so used the novella to make a voice for the poor and highlight the exploitation of the poor.
Thomas Malthus:
He was an influential British economist and believed poverty was a consequence of the increasing population and increase in food demand which led to many people starving.
The 1834 poor law:
This caused the introduction of workhouses which were intended to provide shelter and food to the poor in exchange for work
Religion:
Redemption and salvation were key ideas as it was believed if you confessed your sins you would receive salvation and therefore experience redemption.
