Multi store model

    Cards (15)

    • What is the multi-store model?

Explanation of how the memory works in terms of 3 memory stores ,sensory register,STM,LTM and through flowing storage systems
    • Diagram for MSM
    • Sensory register

All stimuli from the environment pass into the SR
    • Transfer from SR to STM

information passes further into memory only if attention is paid to it
    • STM
Limited capacity store of temporary duration
    • Transfer from STM to LTM

Maintenance rehearsal occurs when we repeat material to ourselves, we then can keep information in STM as long as we rehearse it and If we rehearse it long enough, it passes into LTM
    • LTM
      Permanent memory store
    • Retrieval from LTM

When we want to recall information stored in LTM it has to be transferred back to STM by a process called retrieval
    • Echoic stores
      auditory information
    • Iconic stores

      Visual information
    • STM store
Encoded acoustically , lasts an average 20 seconds unless rehearsed
    • LTM store

Encoded semantically, retrieval is the process to transfer it back into our STM into our LTM
    • Research support for differentiating STM and LTM,AO3

Pro, studies found that we tend to mix words that sound similar when using our STM and that we tend to mix up words that have similar meanings when using our LTM
    • No real world application,AO3

Con,the studies tend not to use everyday information of digits and letters
    • Bygone model,AO3

MSM was a useful model that explained a lot of evidence back then however it became clear that it cannot account for many more research findings
