  • The number rose to seven when the gymnasium measured from 1,800 to 3,600 square feet (334.5 square meters) and up to nine when the playing area exceeded that.

  • Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground.
  • The game is played in a court with hoops at each end.
  • The court is divided into two by the mid-court line.
  • If the offensive team puts the ball into play behind the mid-court line, it has eight seconds to get the ball over the mid-court line.
  • The team with the ball is called the offense. The team without the ball is called the defense.
  • The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by dribbling. 
  • When a team makes a basket, they score two points and the ball goes to the other team.
  • If a basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth three points.
  • A free throw is worth one point. Awarded to a team according to some formats involving the number of fouls committed

  • When fouled while shooting, the player gets 2 points if his shot doesn’t go in. If it does, the player gets only 1 free throw.

  • Dribbling - important to move the ball across the court.
  • Passing - helps find an open man, to find a good shooter or to get away from a defender.
  • Shooting - The object of the game is to win by scoring the most points.
  • Rebounding - is essential to gain or regain possession after the shot.
  • Offense - Only chance that the team has a shot at the basket and scoring. Requires coordination among players and individual skill to execute well plays.
  • Defense - try to stop their opponent from scoring.
  • Moves - Important in executing both a good offense and a good defense.
  • Violations - Knowing the kinds of basketball violations improves your game.
  • Foul - often an accidental contact made by the defender to his opponent or an aggressive move by the ball-handler towards his defender.
