intermolecular forces

Cards (6)

  • Intermolecular forces (strongest to weakest)
    • Ion-Dipole Interactions
    • Hydrogen Bonding
    • Dipole Dipole Interactions
    • Diole Induce Dipole forces
    • London Dispersion Forces
  • Hydrogen bonding
Occurs when hydrogen bonded to F, O, or N, strength increases as electronegativity does
  • London Dispersion Forces (LDFs)

Grow larger as moles (# of electrons) increases, can become extremely strong for large molecules, present in every molecules but most of time weakest (expect in big molecules) so overpowered by stronger IMFs
  • Dipole-dipole

Occurs between 2 dipoles and is permanent medium strength which increases as electronegativity difference increases
  • Ion-dipole

Occurs between an ion and nearby polar molecule, stronger than dipole/dipole and hydrogen bc of full charge, strength increases as charge increases and molecule size increases
  • Dipole-induce-dipole forces
Occurs between permanent dipole (or ion) and nonpolar molecule
