Wiles' Study of CBT

Cards (6)

  • Aim
To test the benefits of using both CBT and anti-depressants for treatment-resistant depression - rather than anti-depressants alone
  • Method
Patients with treatment-resistant depression either continued using just anti-depressants or took part in CBT as well. Improvements were measured using the BDI
  • Results
After 6 months 422 participants remained in the study
21.6% of those who were given just usual care had a >50% reduction in their symptoms, but 46.1% of those who had their usual care and CBT noticed a similar reduction
  • Conclusion
Using CBT and anti-depressants in conjunction is more effective than just anti-depressants
  • Weakness
The study used self-reporting methods which may have meant that participants didn't score their depression accurately
  • Strength
The participants were randomly assigned to the groups which controlled extraneous variables
