Pavlov

Cards (8)

  • PAVLOV – AIM
To see if associating a reflex with a neutral stimulus causes learning to take place and produce a conditioned response
  • Procedure
    • 35 dogs put into a sensory deprived room – no sight, sounds or smells and strapped into a harness
    • Tubes were surgically inserted into salivary glands
    BASELINE
    • Pavlov put the meat in the dogs mouth and measured saliva
    CONTROL
    • Pavlov showed the dogs food and measured saliva
    EXPERIMENTAL
    • Paired food with metronome, buzzer and tuning fork
    • 20 times
    • Measured saliva
    • Presented NS without meat
  • Findings
    BASELINE
    • Salivated 1-2 seconds
    CONTROL
    • Salivated after 5s, 6 drops after 15s
    EXPERIMENTAL
    • Salivated after 9s, 11 drops after 45s
  • Conclusion
Dogs can learn by association as signalisation in the brain links the metronome to food and gives the reflex response of salivation when the metronome is present but food is not.
You can pair a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus in order to generate a new CR behaviour
  • :) Cause and Effect
highly controlled sensory deprived room, no extraneous e.g sight and smell of the food. T/f sure that manipulation of IV caused change in DV
  • :) Objective
quantitative data (saliva produced). T/f internal validity, can only be interpreted one way
  • :( Anthropromorphic
large differences between dogs+humans e.g. dogs have a diff genotype. T/f can’t be generalised to human behaviour
  • :( Care over caging
dogs kept in sensory deprived room and only fed in harness. T/f doesn’t meet ethical requirements for caging so unethical
