  • used monkeys as its more ethical than using humans- has led to a greater understanding of love and comfort in attachment, however, the monkeys showed abnormal and distressed behaviour which raises ethical questions about animal research.
  • Humans are more complex in terms of their cognitions and attachment in humans involves more sensitive bonding that is influenced by both social factors and language. therefore we must be cautious when we extrapolate research into attachment in monkeys to humans
  • Another limitation of Harlows research is cofounding variables, the surrogate monkeys faces were different to eachother which could have impacted the results
