    • Prescription medicine can be ordered and bought from drugstores and pharmacies upon presentation of a prescription from a medical professional.
  • EX of prescription medicine: Antibiotic, Antihypertensive, Depresants, Narcotics, and Stimulants
    • Antibiotics - destroys pathogens or harmful microorganisms that causes disease.
    • example: Penicillin cephalosporins and tetracycline
    • Antihypertensive - helps control and maintain blood pressure
    • Example: captopril candesartan losartan and Aliskiren
    • Depressants - referred to as sedatives or tranquilizers, are medicines that slow down the central nervous system.
    • Examples: Methadone, Morphine, and Hydrocodone
    • Stimulants - energizes the central nervous system
  • Narcotics - relieves pain by blocking the transmission of nerve impulse between the brain and spinal cord.
    • Example: opium hydromorphone and fentanyl
  • GENERIC DRUGS - are medicines that are chemical clones of a drug sold under a brand name
  • OVER THE COUNTER (OTC) DRUGS - can be purchased without prescription from pharmacies grocery stores and other retail outlets.
  • Examples and Uses of Over-the-Counter Medicines:
    Analgesics, Antidiarrheal, Antacid, Antipyretic, Anti-inflammatory, Antiseptic, and Decongestant
  • Analgesics - helps treat mild body pain but is not an anti-inflammatory.
    • Examples: Dolfenal, mefenamic acid, skelan, Medicol, etc.
  • • Antidiarrheal - helps treat loose vowel movement or
    LBM.
    • Examples: Lomotil, diatabs, imodium (loperamide)
  • Antacid - helps control the acid level of the stomach and relieve the pain and discomfort caused by such condition. It helps treat heartburn and indigestion.
    • Examples: Gaviscon, Dulcolax, Mylanta
  • Antipyretics - helps lower body temperature during a fever.
    Examples: Ibuprofen, acetaminop hen, aspirin
  • • Anti-inflammatory helps treat swelling body parts due to infection.
    • Examples: Aspirin, Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Celecoxib
  • • Antiseptic - helps prevent the spread of pathogens.
    There are antiseptics that are for external use only and applied on skin or taken orally to cleanse the mouth but are not to be swallowed.
    •Examples: Chlorhexidine and other biguanides,
    Peroxide and permanganate
  • Decongestant - helps to relieve nasal and chest congestion and difficulty in breathing caused by build-up of phlegm and mucus around the nasal linings.
    • Examples: Afrin, Dristan, Vicks Sinex
