Basketball defensive strategies
Man-on-man defense
Zone defense
Hybrid defenses
The goal of the offense in basketball is to break through the opponent's defense and set up an uncontested shot
Man-to-man defense
Defender tries to stop and block opponent who enters the area below the basket
If opponent leaves the area, responsibility of other defending player to cover that opponent
Hybrid defenses
Teams change defensive strategy often from man-on-man to zone defense to keep opponents on their toes
Teams rarely use a mix of both man-on-man and zone defense styles
Box-and-one defense is useful when there is a dominant player on the opposing team
Fast break
Offense attempts to move the ball forward as quickly as possible so that the defense is out of position and outnumbered
Positional play
Offense tries to adjust to the opponent's defense, building up the game through good positioning, passing and blocking/cutting
There are many more plays/systems in basketball beyond fast break and positional play
Pick and roll
Attacker without the ball blocks the path of the defender covering the leader, allowing the attacker with the ball to make an uncontested shot
Triangle offense
Attackers form a triangle of 3 players (center, forward, guard) positioned close to the basket, promoting fast passing and movement
Princeton offense
Center is at the top of the key, other players outside the 3-point line, forcing defense away from the basket and creating lanes for backdoor passes and layups
Shooting
The most important skill in basketball, requiring both mechanical and mental aspects
Great shooters are made, not born
Rebound
Statistic awarded to a player who retrieves the ball after a missed field goal or free throw
Types of rebounds
