Asexual Plant Reproduction

Cards (24)

  • Reproduction is the biological process by which new individual organisms – “offspring” – are produced from their parent organisms
  • Plant do this in 2 ways, asexually and sexually
    Reproduction
  • is a type of reproduction that produces identical offspring from a single parent plant
    Asexual Reproduction
  • The two types of asexual reproduction are Natural Vegetative Reproduction and Artificial Propagation Methods.
  • Plant reproduction from its vegetative parts or specialized reproductive structures
    Natural vegetative reproduction
  • The different types of natural vegetative reproduction are tuber, runner, corm, rhizome, and bulb.
  • New shoots arise from axillary bud on swollen, short, fleshly, underground stem.
    Tuber
  • Potato is an example of tuber.
  • New plant arise at nodes of above ground horizontal stem
    Runner
  • Bermuda grass and strawberry plants are examples of runner.
  • New plant arise from very short, thickened, underground stem with thin, scaly leaves
    Corm
  • Gladiolus is an example of corm.
  • New plant arise at nodes of underground horizontal root-like stem
    Rhizome
  • Sugarcane and ginger are examples of rhizome.
  • New bulbs arise from axillary bud on very short stem with thick fleshy leaves (only in monocots)
    Bulb
  • Onion and garlic are examples of a bulb.
  • Asexual methods are also practiced with a little help from humans
    Artificial propagation methods
  • Leaves or pieces of stems or roots are cut from one plant, planted in soil and used to grow new individual
    Cutting
  • Ornamental trees and shrubs (grapes, apples) are examples of cutting
  • Small stems from one plant are attached to larger stems or roots of another plant
    Budding or grafting
  • Some fruit and nut tress (oranges) are example of grafting.
  • Pieces of tissues from one plant are placed on a sterile medium and used to grow new individuals in mass numbers
    Tissue culture
  • Orchids, potatoes, and many house plants are examples of tissue culture.
  • The different types of artificial propagation methods are cutting, budding or grafting, and tissue culture.
