Ozymandias

Cards (5)

  • "Half sunk, a shattered visage lies"
.this is ironic as even a powerful human being (Egyptian pharaoh, called Ramesses II) can't control the power of time

.plosives (repetition of 'k' sounds) creates a reassuring tone, emphasising the pharaohs tone of pride
  • "Look on my works, ye mighty and despair"
.'look on my works' is ironic because they are not his works, they are infected the work of his slaves who he mistreats due to his belief of superiority (CONTEXT: he even married within his bloodline in order not to taint their bloodline with average blood)
.presents his naivety as he is telling people to despair him due ot his size and importance, yet he doesn't realise how the passage of time destroys him
  • "The lone and level lands stretch far away"
.alliteration emphasises the feeling of emptiness
.'stretch far away' highlights the vast size of the desert in contrast to ramesses II statue which outlasted him
.suggests insignificance of the statue, shows shelleys opinions on the dictator (tyrant) and how she feels they should not exist and she emphasises the statues insignificance throughout
