Identity
A person's sense of self in relation to gender. Each person's experience with their gender identity is unique and personal
The category for sex is based on what you have in your body, it is therefore constant across time and cultures
Gender identity isn't about who you're attracted to, but about who you ARE — male, female, genderqueer, etc
Agender
A person who does not identify with any particular gender, or they may have no gender at all
Other terms: neutral gender, null-gender, genderless, neutrois
Androgyne
Describes a person whose gender identity or presentation blends elements of masculinity and femininity, or falls outside of those categories altogether
Bigender
A specific gender identity where someone identifies with two genders at the same time. These genders can be masculine and feminine, or a combination of any gender
Butch
Women, especially lesbians, tend to use this term to describe the way they express masculinity, or what society defines as masculinity
Can also be a gender identity in itself
Cisgender
Someone whose gender matches what they were assigned at birth
Cisgender Man
Someone who was assigned male at birth and identifies as a man
Cisgender Woman
Someone who was assigned female at birth and identifies as a woman
Transgender
Someone whose gender identity is different from the one they were assigned at birth
Trans Man
Someone who was assigned female at birth and identifies as a man
Trans Woman
Someone who was assigned male at birth and identifies as a woman
Gender Fluid
Someone who may fluctuate between genders or express multiple genders at the same time. Their gender may also vary at random or vary in response to different circumstances
GenderOutlaw
A person who refuses to allow society's definition of "male" or "female" to define them
Genderqueer
This gender identity is neither male nor female, is between or beyond genders, or is some combination of genders
Non-binary
Often used as an umbrella term for identities that fall outside the male/female gender binary. Has a very broad meaning and may vary from person to person
Polygender and Pangender
People who experience and display parts of multiple genders
Two Spirit
An umbrella term that encompasses different sexualities and genders in Indigenous Native American communities
Gender identity (and expression) develop early and stay the same over time for some, while for others either one may change at any time during a person's life, more commonly during childhood and adolescence than later in adulthood
The mirror stage entails a "libidinal dynamism" caused by the young child's identification with his own image (ideal ego). It's a big moment in a child's development because it's when they start to recognize themselves as an individual
