  • -Following the assassination of Franz Ferdinand Austria-Hungary sent a ten-point ultimatum to Serbia on the 23rd July. -Serbia was keen to avoid war+accepted the majority of the points, but refused to accept them all as it would have meant losing control of its justice system. -Austria-Hungary saw this as unacceptable and declared war on Serbia on the 28th July. -Germany had given full support to Austria-Hungary‘s deceleration and promised they would give whatever support was needed from- a move known as the Kaiser’s ‘blank cheque’.

  • -With French backing Russia mobilised its army to defend Serbia on the 30th July. -Germany issued an ultimatum demanding Russia call off its mobilisation but it was not. -Germany into launched the Schiefflan Plan and invading Belgium on the 2nd August in a surprise attack to take out France as it saw a European war as inevitable. -Britain was dragged into war on the 4th August.
