1.7 Redox

Cards (9)

  • What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the loss of electrons.
  • What is reduction?
Reduction is the gain of electrons.
  • Hydrogen's default oxidation state is +1, what is an exception for the default oxidation state of hydrogen?
If it is in a metal hydride, it becomes a hydride ion which has an oxidation state of -1.
  • Oxygen's default oxidation state is -2, What is an exception for this default oxidation state?
If oxygen is in a peroxide, it becomes a peroxide ion which has an oxidation state of -1.
  • What is the method for writing half equations?
    Every Otter Hates Chemistry:
    Electrons.
    Oxygens.
    Hydrogens.
    Charges.
  • What is an oxidising agent
An oxidising agency accepts electrons, it brings about oxidation and is itself reduced
  • What is a reducing agent
A reducing agent donates electrons and brings about reduction while being oxidised itself.
  • What is disproportionation?
Disproportionation occurs when an element is both oxidised and reduced simultaneously.
  • How is this an example of disproportionation? 2H2O2 --> 2H2O + O2
The H2O2 molecule has undergone both oxidation and reduction simultaneously, oxygen goes from an oxidation state of -1 in H2O2, to -2 in H2O and 0 in O2.
