      Individual adopts group's behaviour, but doesn't agree with it, conforms at a public level but not a personal level, results from NSI
    • Identification

      Individual adopts and maintains group's behaviour even away from group, only a temporary change so reverts back when they leave the group
    • Internalisation
      True conformity, individual agrees with group's views and internalises them, leads to a change in public and private, results from ISI
    • Informational social influence (ISI)

      The desire to be right, person changes to fit with majority when unsure, occurs in ambiguous situations, most likely to result in internalisation
    • Normative social influence (NSI)
      The desire to be liked, person changes to be liked/accepted by the majority, most likely to result in compliance and is a short term change
