  • Why did the Word become flesh?
    • To save - CCC 457 "The Word became flesh for us in order to save us by reconciling us with God, who 'loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins': "the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world", and 'he was revealed to take away sins': Sick, our nature demanded to be healed; fallen, to be raised up; dead, to rise again. We had lost the possession of the good; it was necessary for it to be given back to us. Closed in the darkness, it was necessary to bring us the light; captives, we awaited a Savior; prisoners, help; slaves, a liberator. Are these things minor or insignificant? Did they not move God to descend to human nature and visit it, since humanity was in so miserable and unhappy a state?"
    • To know God's love - CCC 458 "The Word became flesh so that thus we might know God's love: 'In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.' 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.'"
    • To model holiness - CCC 459 "The Word became flesh to be our model of holiness: 'Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.' 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.' On the mountain of the Transfiguration, the Father commands: 'Listen to him!' Jesus is the model for the Beatitudes and the norm of the new law: 'Love one another as I have loved you.' This love implies an effective offering of oneself, after his example."
    • To share the grace of God - 2 Peter 1:4 "By these he has given us his precious promises, great beyond all price, so that through them you may escape from the corruption with which evil desires have infected the world and thereby may come to share in the divine nature."
  • Why did Jesus die?
    • So that we may know how to respond to cruelty - Luke 23:34 "Then Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'"
    • To offer eternal life for humanity - Luke 23:43 "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
  • Jesus erased the sins of the world with God's mercy - God himself died on the cross

    • It was the 'letting go' of Jesus, ready for the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost - Acts 2:1-4 "When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all assembled together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there came from heaven a sound similar to that of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which separated and came to rest on each one of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit enabled them to do so."
    • Prepares the way for humans to follow Jesus to Heaven - John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may attain eternal life. 17 'For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him...'."
