  • Food Tests

    1. Grind up food to make a sample
    2. Add water to the ground up food
    3. Use the Benedict's Test to Test for Sugars
    4. Prepare food sample
    5. Add Benedict's solution to the test tube
    6. Place the test tube in the water bath
    7. If the food sample contains a reducing sugar, the solution in the test tube will change colour
  • Use Iodine Solution to Test for Starch

    1. Make food sample
    2. Add a few drops of iodine solution and shake the tube
    3. If the sample contains starch, the colour of the solution will change from yellow to black
  • Use the Biuret Test to Test for Proteins

    1. Prepare a sample of your food
    2. Add 2 mL of Biuret solution to the sample and mix by shaking
    3. If the food sample contains protein, the solution will change from blue to purple
  • Use the Sudan III Test to Test for Lipids
    1. Prepare a sample of the food you're testing
    2. Add 3 drops of Sudan III stain solution to the test tube and mix
    3. If the sample contains lipids, the mixture will separate out with a bright red top layer
  • Make sure to do a risk assessment before starting these tests as there are a lot of chemicals to use
