Giving unreliable people the role of narration

Cards (1)

  • "She was incurably dishonest" + "Michaelis wasn't even sure of it's colour - he told the first policeman it was light green"

Nick is not present for some key incidents in the novel and allows other characters to recount these events to the reader. However, Nick presents these characters as unreliable before introducing their narratives. These include Jordan Baker's description of Gatsby and Daisy's first meeting and Michaelis explaining Myrtle Wilson's death. This structure of the Novel highlights the shallowness of the upper class for Jordan and Illusion versus Reality for Michaelis.
