• Part 2 – A test for an aldehyde using Fehling’s solution

  Reagent: warm with Fehling’s solution

  Observation: Brick-red precipitate
• Part 3 – A test for an alkene (a test for unsaturation)

  Alkene

  Reagent: add bromine water

  Observation: Orange to colourless
• Part 4 – A test for a carboxylic acid

  Carboxylic acid

  Reagent: add sodium carbonate

  Observation: Fizzing
• Part 5 – A test for a haloalkane

  Haloalkane

  Reagent: warm with NaOH, add HNO3 and then add AgNO3

  Observation: Precipitate of the silver halide
