photosynthesis

Cards (12)

  • Where does photosynthesis takes place?
in the chloroplast - pigment chlorophyll that absorbs sunlight to convert CO2 & H20 into C6H12O6 and O2
  • word equation for photosynthesis:
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
  • balanced symbol equation:
    6CO2 + 6H20 -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
  • is photosynthesis an endo or exo reaction and why?
endothermic reaction = requires energy from the sun (environment)
  • how do plants get the carbon dioxide required for photosynthesis?

through the stomata and water is taken up from the soil to the roots and then transported to the leaves via xylem
  • what do plants use oxygen for?

    respiration
  • 5 things plants use glucose for cellular respiration
    • breaks glucose apart to release energy
    • lots of glucose combine = cellulose (complex carbohydrate) strengthens cell walls
    • combine to make starch & doesn't have a particular function but is good for long term storage = compact and insoluble
    • making amino acids -> combining glucose and nitrate = combine AMAC to make proteins
    • making oils + fats= stored for future energy source
  • why is starch needed in plants?
so they can store it to break it down into glucose when photosynthesis isn't happening as much (winter)
  • how can photosynthesis release energy when needed?
it traps the sun's light energy in glucose molecules and in other cells around the plant to break glucose apart
  • plants growth depends on....?

    how fast they can photosynthesise
  • How do plants get the water required for photosynthesis?
it diffuses from the soil into the root hair by osmosis
  • what makes starch a useful long-term storage molecule?
can easily be broken down when needed. it is insoluble in water. it is compact
