    • ‘Anyone who kills a human being shall be put to death. Anyone who kills an animal shall make compensation for it, life for life. Anyone who maims another shall suffer the same injury in return: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; the injury inflicted is the injury to be suffered.’ Leviticus 24:17-20
    • According to the Mishnah (oral Torah), the death penalty could only be inflicted by a Sanhedrin (council of men appointed in every city in Israel) of 23 judges, after trial.
    • The Mishnah identifies 4 types of death penalty: stoning, burning, slaying by the sword, and strangling.
    • Restrictions/conditions of execution = Requires two witnesses to the crime itself, and both witnesses have issued warning prior to the crime being committed.
