1.7 The significance of the paschal mystery

• Humans cannot save themselves from sin, but can choose to accept salvation
• Original sin- inherited from first humans (washed away at baptism)
• Personal sin- consequence of own action
• Sin separates a person from God
• Salvation is important because it is the only way to have a real relationship with God
• Salvation is important because without it, a person's sin will prevent them from entering heaven
• Grace- undeserved mercy eg. Jesus dying for sinners
• Christians receive the grace of God at baptism
• The catholic Church teaches that grace comes through:

  • Leading a Christian life

  • Receiving sacraments of baptism, confirmation and reconciliation

  • Receiving the sacrament of the eucharist in the mass
• The catholic catechism teaches that no one but God knows who and who will not be saved
