meiosis and mitosis

  A process of cell division
• 1.4 billion years ago, cells gained the ability to divide using another process of cell division called meiosis

  The cell decides it is ready to split, the DNA duplicates, and the centrioles line up in the right position
• Metaphase


  The DNA lines up along a central axis, the DNA has condensed into chromosomes, and the chromosomes connect at the center with something called a centromere
• Anaphase


  Half of the chromosomes are pulled to one side of the cell, half go the other way
• Telophase


  The cell membrane closes in and splits the cell into two pieces
• Interphase


  The resting state of the process
• Meiosis


  Has two cell divisions compared to mitosis, goes through the same phases but only twice, creates four cells with half the amount of DNA needed by itself
• Meiosis happens when it's time to reproduce an organism
