  • Composition in space
    • This refers to structure or the manner the artist uses or arranges the element of the artwork in an area, and how these components relate to each other.
  • Color
    • This refers to visible light as it reflected from surfaces.
    • Associated with our experiences of cold and warmth, and the quality of light in our tropical environment, the cycles of night and day, of darkness and light.
  • Line
    • An identifiable path that moves from one point to another. It may be visible or implied, and can go in any direction (straight or curved).
    • Most basic two-dimensional form.
  • Chiaroscuro
    • From the Italian word “light-dark” the term originated from the Renaissance.
    • Refers to the management of light and dark tones and/or shading, to “model” or create illusion of form and depth. 
  • Non-figurative
    • Representational art that excludes human forms.
  • Expressionist
    • An artistic style that reflects the inner emotional and/or psychological state of the creator--particularly of angst--instead of relying in naturalistic techniques, regardless of the subject.
  • Texture
    • Refers to how objects and surfaces feel, and is most associated with the sense of touch or tactility.
  • Value or tone
    • Describes the brightness in color; how dark or light it is.
  • Movement
    • This may occur in two-dimensional design. The eye’s perception of directional action.
  • Shape
    • Refers to forms that are two-dimesional or three-dimensional.

    • Exist a planes having length and width.

    • Possess length, width, and volume.

  • Red is a very strong color. It is a noticeable color that is often used on caution and warning signs. It is often associated with "stop" or “beware”. It’s a hot color that evokes a powerful emotion of passion, lust, sex, energy, blood and war.
  • Blue is a cool calming color that shows creativity and intelligence. It is a popular color among large corporations, hospitals and airlines. It is a color of loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust.
  • Orange is a combination of Red and Yellow. It is also a bright and warm color. It represents fire, the sun, fun, warmth and tropical images.
  • Yellow is the brightest color to the human eye. It represents youth, fun, happiness, sunshine and other light playful feelings. It is a cheerful energetic color.
  • Green is the color of nature and health. It represents growth, nature, money, fertility and safety. Green is a relaxing color that is easy on the eye and has a healing power to it.
  • Representational element - a category of art that possesses or represents existing forms and are identifiable as the shapes they stand for.
  • Non-representational- A category of arts that uses forms that do not stand for extant objects or are rendered in a way that they are not identifiable with its basis.
  • Figurative - Representation art that includes human or human-like forms.
  • Biomorphic - Stylized and abstract shapes can be seen in local textiles. The geometric shapes of the binakol by the Tinggians of Abra, Northern Philippines.
  • Abstract - an artistic style that does not rely on representation for its imagery but uses elements of art such as line, color, etc.
  • Stylized - this generally applies to visual representation that does not conform to a naturalistic look or attempt to mimic the appearance of things as they are in real life, but retain a certain degree of semblance to the object portrayed.
  • Collage - a technique that composes imagery through the combination of various materials adhered to a single flat surface, to be treated as a unified whole.
  • Humans process information through perception– when senses pick up external stimuli and cognition—recognizing and understanding what is perceived; after which,an individual may have internal or external responses. Why we react to these artistic elements in predictable ways maybe explained by three theories:
    1. Physical factors
    2. Psychophysical experiences
    3. Social conventions
  • Physical factors - Are biologically hardwired and correspond to the structure of the human body; in visual art, the eye is particularly important. The eye can only process red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, etc.
  • Psychophysical experiences - Based on our experiences, we relate specific attributes and react parallel to how we will consciously or subconsciously react to real objects that have these features.
  • Social conventions
    • Meanings, sometimes not necessarily related to the subject in nature, are attached to forms or images and then the associations are passed down within societies with the same culture.
  • Medium is defined as the material, or the substance out of which a work is made. Through these materials, the artists express and communicate feelings and ideas.
