Humans process information through perception– when senses pick up external stimuli and cognition—recognizing and understanding what is perceived; after which,an individual may have internal or external responses. Why we react to these artistic elements in predictable ways maybe explained by three theories:
Physical factors
Psychophysical experiences
Social conventions
Physical factors - Are biologically hardwired and correspond to the structure of the human body; in visual art, the eye is particularly important. The eye can only process red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, etc.
Psychophysical experiences - Based on our experiences, we relate specific attributes and react parallel to how we will consciously or subconsciously react to real objects that have these features.
Social conventions
Meanings, sometimes not necessarily related to the subject in nature, are attached to forms or images and then the associations are passed down within societies with the same culture.
Medium is defined as the material, or the substance out of which a work is made. Through these materials, the artists express and communicate feelings and ideas.
