      way in which peoples thoughts, feelings, appearance and behaviour are regulated in social systems

    • inequality
      unfair situation where resources or opportunities are distributed unequally within a society

      type of social inequality where society is divided into different levels on the basis of social characteristics such as: wealth, status

      term used to define social inequalities - e.g certain groups have more access to wealth than others
    • social action theory
      a way of viewing socialisation emphasising social action
    • equal opportunities
      right to access the same opportunities regardless of factors such as: race, age, sex etc..
    • prejudice
      forming unfavourable opinions of an individual based on inadequate facts
    • discrimination
      unfair treatment of a person or minority ethnic groups - make a distinction and act on prejudice
    • stereotyping
      making simple generalisations about all members of a group which allows others to categories and treat them accordingly
    • overt discrimination
      highly visible - in the form of verbal abuse - telling someone they cant play
    • covert discrimination

      harder to uncover - individuals vote for their captain and negative stereotypes influence them voting a candidate with a disability
    • integration
      disability sport included with non-disabled sport
    • segregation
      disability sport completely seperated from non-disabled sport
    • stacking
      term used as an illustration of racism - used to explain lack of team captains from minority ethnic groups
    • channeling
      minority ethnic groups may be channeled away from certain sports into others based on stereotypical assumptions
    • gender socialisation
      behaviour and attitudes historically considered appropriate for a given sex e.g: boys learn to be boys
