  • How did internal combustion engine affect the nature of warfare?
Internal combustion engine allowed greater mobility on battlefield. Eg played crucial role in German blitzkrieg assaults of 1939-40, allowing their Panzer divisions to penetrate deep behind French defences and oversee the fall of France in 6 weeks.
  • How did aeroplanes/railways/steamships affect the nature of warfare?
Aeroplanes/railways/steamships meant soldiers could be moved greater distances at greater speeds. Eg the D-Day landings in 1944 saw over 150,000 Allied soldiers cross the Channel to take a bridgehead in Normandy. Over 21,000 paratroopers were deployed via aircraft to help seize important locations in D-Day landings
  • How did communication affect the nature of warfare?
Radios allowed generals to communicate from further distances. For example during the Dambusters raid of 1943, Arthur Harris was able to be kept updated throughout due to wireless communications. Radios also allowed for greater communication between different units such as infantry, tank corps and aircraft. For example during the German blitzkrieg campaigns of 1939-40, radios allowed the infantry, Panzers, and Luftwaffe to co-ordinate their assaults.
