military plans (WW2)

Cards (4)

  • Effective use of German blitzkrieg?
    • Poland took 4 weeks to defeat in 1939
    • Fall of France in 6 weeks (46 days) in 1940
  • Ineffective use of German Blitzkrieg?
Operation Barbarossa- first 4 months it was highly effective but Hilter underestimated the size and scale of Russia and the size of the Red army (he believed it to be 3 million when they were still fighting after capturing 3 million). The fuel crisis where Hitler avoids advancing on Moscow so the Russians have time to reenergise whilst they divert for oil
  • Similarities between failure of Schlieffen plan and blitzkrieg?
    • Relying on assumptions
    • inflexible (both relied on quick victories)
    • both result in 2 front war
    • heavy reliance on other factors for plans to work
  • What other factors influenced the plan of blitzkrieg and short decisive battles?
Alliances, tech, industrial capacity. This plan aimed at avoiding a multi frontal war by eliminating enemies in single decisive campaigns. Heavily reliant on new tech like aircraft and tanks. Another consideration was that Germany needed to conquer other states in order to require war materials
