    • dictatorships- dramatic increase in control
    • USSR- Stalin controlled economy, great purge of own generals, repressed population, huge sacrifice (1 million Stalingrad)
    • Adopted total war- rationing, conscription, heavy taxation
    • Civilian targets- children evacuated
    • Nazi Germany- conscription, one party state, censorship, Nazi victories increased popularity which gave access to many goods/raw materials
    • restrictions to civilian life following allied bobbing raids- industry had to be moved, strict rationing
  • Changes to nature of warfare?
    • targeting civilians to destroy morale (bombs)
    • propaganda ensured war fought to bitter end - peace impossible
    • utilised modern weapons eg Kursk 1943 greatest tank battle 500,000 German casualties
