Solids
, liquids and gases
They are all pictures of
water
, so they have the
same
types of particles
They are in
different
states of matter. 1 is a solid, 2 is a liquid and
3
is a gas
How
to get from picture 1 to picture 2
You can get from ice (solid) to water (liquid) by
melting
States
of matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
In
each state, the particles are the same, but the way they're
arranged
changes
Objects
sorted into states of matter
Solid
: Crayons, Books, Cheese, Ice
Liquid
: Ice cream, Hot chocolate, Puddle, Paint, Drink, Milk
Gas
: Steam, Wind
There are three different states of matter:
solids
, liquids and
gases
Water
can exist in all three of these states as ice, liquid water and
steam
In the different states, the particles of water are
identical
but the properties of the states are
different
This is because of the way the
particles
are arranged
Solid
Have a
fixed
shape and
cannot
flow
They cannot be
compressed
(squashed)
Liquid
They flow and take the shape of the
bottom
of their container
They cannot be
compressed
(squashed)
Gas
They flow and completely fill their container
They can be
compressed
(squashed)
Reason
for properties of states
The particles can
move
around each other
The particles cannot
move
from place to place
The particles are
close
together and have no
space
to move into
The particles are
far apart
and have
space
to move into
The particles can move
quickly
in
all
directions
The gaps between particles in a gas do not contain
air
Liquids and gases take the
shape
of their container because the
particles
are free to move around because there are weak forces between the particles
Solid and liquids can be
squashed
as the particles are not very
hard
Particles in a gas move randomly and at high speed
Particles in a solid do not move around as the forces between the particles are very strong
