An element is a substance that contains only one type of atom
A compound contains two or more elements chemically joined
A mixture contains two or more elements or compounds or both that are not chemically joined e.g steel
If there are only two elements in the compound then the compounds name ends in -ide
If the compound contains three or more elements one of which is oxygen then the compounds name ends in -ate
The small number on the right of the element says how many atoms of that element there are in the compound. They are always found on the bottom right of the element
The substances in a mixture are easy to separate as they are not chemically joined.
The substances in a compound are hard to separate as they are chemically joined
The new compound made in a chemical reaction is totally different from the original elements as it is a new substance. This is why the new compound has different properties from the elements.
The difference between a pure substance and a mixture is that a pure substance is made up of only one element or compound but a mixture is made up of many different substances.
Substances in a mixture each behave in the same way as they would if they were each on their own because they are not chemically joined
