• The teeth are used to breakdown food through chewing (mastication)
• Saliva is secreted into the mouth by the salivary glands
• Saliva contains salivary amylase which is an enzyme that breaks down starch into simple sugars
• The tongue creates a ball of food (bolus) to help make swallowing easier
