The pharynx and oesophagus

• The bolus is pushed to the back of the mouth which leads to the oesophagus
• The oesophagus carries food to the stomach
• It also secretes mucous to lubricate the passage of food
• Food moves through the oesophagus by wave length muscle contractions (peristalsis)
