  • tough waxy cuticle on leaves
  • layers of dead cells around stems which fall off (bark on trees)

  • antibacterial chemicals
  • poisons to deter herbivores
• Mechanical defence adaptations:

  • thorns and hairs deter animals
  • leaves which droop or curl when touched
  • mimicry to trick animals
