Aims of Punishment

  • protection
  • justice/vindication
  • deterrence
• • Retribution: Punishment as vengeance for a wrong act
• • Reparation: Making amends for wrong (usually payment)
• • Reformation: Change for the better
• • Protection: Protect society and criminal
• • Justice/vindication : Make fair/dismiss blame
• • Deterrence: Deter people from crime (as they know punishment)
• • If people sin or commit crime, justice must follow
• • Jesus taught the importance of forgiveness and compassion
• • Many support punishment leading to forgiveness (e.g. restorative practice)
