  • +/- of a lab experiments as well as why we use lab experiments.
use to measure something which is hard to measure as well as something which would be unethical to do if using a different RM.

    +
    Measures cause + effect.
Is easy to replicate due to it being standardised and operationalised.

    -
    Demand characteristics can reduce validity.
Low ecological validity due to artificial setting.
  • What is a correlational study?
Looks at two variables which are seen as co-variables and not based on cause and effect.

    - Looks for relationship between covariables.
    - Does not manipulate variables.
    - Can be positive, negative or have no correlation.
    - Results can be put on a graph.
    - If you measure the relationship between 2 people you can calculate a concordance rate.

Use this when it is not possible to manipulate variables.

    +
Used to test things which wouldn't be able to manipulate.
Produced quantitative data which is easy to analyse and compare.

    -
They can predict a relationship, there may be extraneous variables causing the perceived correlation.
  • What studies am i using for cog processes?
    Sparrow 2011 - Lab.
    Chou + Edge - correlation.
  • What studies am i using for emotion + cognition?
    Schaffer 2011 - natural.
    Titov 2009 - lab.
