  • Subdural hematoma

    Bleeding between dura & arachnoid membranes due to tearing of bridging veins running between hemisphere & sinuses, resulting in venous bleeding and slow accumulation
  • Subdural hematoma

    • Latent interval (lucid) between injury & symptoms onset may be weeks or months
    • #1 cause is head trauma
    • Elderly & alcoholics have higher risk because of atrophic brain
    • Other risk factors: previous head injury, use of anti-thrombotic medications
  • Presentation of subdural hematoma
    • Headache
    • Drowsiness
    • Confusion
    • Change in mental function
    • Focal neuro signs or hemiparesis
    • Some may present w/ coma
  • CT finding

    Crescent shape hematoma (concave) that crosses sutures
  • Treatment of subdural hematoma

    1. Neurosurgical evacuation if symptomatic
    2. May regress spontaneously
