      Social: 300,000 sent to prison, 2,000 executed, Christian church penalized
    • Hungarian uprising of 1956

      Student demonstrations in Budapest opposing Soviet influence
      Toppling of Stalin statue
      Khrushchev sent Red Army to restore order
      Replaced Rakosi with Nagy
      Nagy demanded Hungary leave Warsaw Pact, become neutral, share power with non-communists
    • Rakosi was seen as a puppet of Stalin
    • With the death of Stalin, Rakosi was replaced by Imre Nagy, highlighting the extent of Soviet interference
    • In 1955, Rakosi once again replaced Nagy, but by July 1956 Rakosi was once again forced from power on the orders of Moscow
