Transpiration and Stomata

Cards (6)

  • What four factors affect transpiration rate?
    • Light intensity
    • Temperature
    • Air flow
    • Humidity
  • How does light intensity affect transpiration rate?
The stomata close as it gets darker as photosynthesis can't occur meaning they don't need to let carbon dioxide in, therefore water cannot escape
  • How does temperature affect transpiration rate?
In warmer temperatures, particles have more energy to evaporate and diffuse out the stomata
  • How does air flow affect transpiration rate?
If there is poor air flow, water vapour surrounds the leaf and doesn't move away, lowering the rate of diffusion as there is a high concentration of water particles outside
  • How does humidity affect transpiration rate?
If the air is humid, it has a high concentration of water particles lowering the rate of diffusion
  • Describe an experiment where you estimate the transpiration rate of a plant
    • Set up an apparatus called a potometer which connects a beaker of water, a plant and a reservoir of water
    • Record the starting position of an air bubble in the tube
    • Start a stopwatch and record the distance moved by the bubble over time
    • Keep conditions constant during the experiment
    • Use rate of water uptake to estimate rate of transpiration
