      Develops around 3 months (Feldmen 2007), refers to when baby/mother responds to the other and elicits a response from them. Babies + mothers spend a lot of time interacting with each other. Mothers generally pick up and respond to infant alertness.

    • By 40 weeks, 50% of babies had specific attachments, 30% multiple
    • Stages of attachment formation

      1. Asocial (0-6 weeks) - basic interactions
      2. Discriminative (2-7 months) - show preference for familiar people
      3. Specific attachment (7-12 months) - show separation anxiety, stronger attachment to primary caregiver
      4. Multiple attachments - shortly after formation of primary attachment, secondary attachments form
