Intergroup conflict: states that whenever there are two or more groups that are seeking the same limited resources, this will lead to conflict, negative stereotypes and beliefs, and discrimination between the groups
This discrimination can lead to things like name calling, showing ingroup favouritism/bias.
The conflict can lead to increasing animosity toward the groups and can cause an ongoing feud to develop.
Conflict can also be perceived and over status.
Realistic conflict theory assumes that people are selfish and will try to maximise their own rewards.
People form ingroups which are centred around power with a set of norms regulating behaviour of group members.
Zero-sum game - there can only be one winner. This will increase levels of prejudice between groups e.g. there can only be one winner of the World Cup
Superordinate goals - are mutually desired goals that cannot be obtained without the participation of two or more groups.
