Photosynthesis is a process by which sunlight energy is used to power the production of
glucose
and
oxygen
from carbon dioxide and water
Photosynthesis chemical equation:
6CO2
+
12H2O--
>C6H12O6+6O2+6H2O
Light-dependent reactions occur in
thylakoid
membranes, where light energy is absorbed by
chlorophyll
pigments and converted into ATP and NADPH.
Thylakoids
are flattened sacs within chloroplasts where
light-dependent
reactions take place.
Tiny pores on the surface of the leaves known as the
stomata
, open to allow carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to
diffuse
into the leaf.
The purpose of the light dependent stage is to generate high energy co enzymes NADPH and
ATP
to power the
second
stage of photosynthesis.
Light dependent stage inputs
: 12 H2O, 12 NADP+, 18 ADP + Pi
Light dependent stage outputs:
6O2
,
12NADPH
, 18 ATP
Light independent stage inputs:
6CO2
,
12NADPH
, 18 ATP
Light
independent stage outputs:
glucose
, 6 H2O, 12 NADP+, 18 ADP+Pi
